How to Check Oil Level in Cars

Checking oil level on dipstick
Motor oil is the lifeblood of your new Alfa Romeo, so unless you drive an electric vehicle, you should know how to check the oil level in your car and keep it filled to the correct amount. Motor oil protects and lubricates all of your engine’s moving components, whether you’re driving around Macomb or on a road trip beyond Utica. Keep reading to learn more about how to check oil levels in cars from the service team at Genesis Alfa Romeo!

Learn How to Check the Oil Level in Your Car

Some newer Alfa Romeo models have electronic oil monitors that don’t have conventional dipsticks, so read your owner’s manual to see if your vehicle has a dipstick for checking the oil. If you’re checking your oil with a dipstick, follow the steps below:

  1. Make sure your car is parked on level ground with the parking brake on and that the engine is off and cold.
  2. Open your hood and find your dipstick.
  3. Pull the dipstick out and wipe any oil off the end of it.
  4. Re-insert the dipstick all the way back into the tube, pull it out again, and look at both sides to see where the motor oil level is.

Dipsticks always have some way of showing the proper oil level with a mark. The level is good if the top of your oil streak is between the two marks or within a cross-hatched area. If it’s not, you need to add oil until it reaches the correct amount. Be sure to buy the oil grade recommended in your owner’s manual for your specific vehicle.

Why Check Your Car’s Oil Level?

Having the proper oil level is crucial to your vehicle’s performance. You should do an oil change at least twice yearly, or about every 7,000 miles, but again, check the recommendations in your owner’s manual. Check your oil at least once a month so you know your car has enough oil for all of your drives around Sterling Heights. If you notice your car’s hood feels hot to touch or see steam billowing out from under the hood, schedule a service appointment with the Genesis Alfa Romeo service center near Clinton Township immediately!

How to Reset Oil Change Light

You should only reset the oil change light if you’ve actually changed the oil because accidentally missing an oil change can damage your vehicle.

How to Reset Oil Change Light: Step-by-Step:

  • Turn off all the systems of your car, but leave the engine running.
  • Look for the “reset” button or stick on your dashboard (typically it’s located near the speedometer and fuel gauge).
  • Hold the button down until the check oil change light begins to flash.
  • Turn the ignition off and wait a few seconds, then start your engine and check if the light has gone off.
